What to Expect at Your First Injection Appointment

Taking the plunge into injectable cosmetic treatments is exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking. You know you are going to get results, and you can’t wait to see them. But walking into that first appointment can be intimidating.

It doesn’t have to be! Once you know what to expect, you can be ready to look younger and feel even better about your beautiful self.

Before the Big Day

Whether your first injection is Botox or dermal fillers, understanding the basics of the treatment you’re considering will make you feel more comfortable and allow you to have an informed conversation with your provider.

When you book your appointment, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for the treatment. These can include avoiding certain medications or supplements that can increase the likelihood for bruising, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil. And since hydration is important to pre- and post-procedure skin,  make sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment and after.

Consultation

Your first injection appointment will begin with a consultation. Here, you’ll discuss your treatment goals, medical history, and any concerns you might have.

During the consultation, don’t hesitate to ask questions. No question is too small or too trivial. Whether you’re curious about how long your results will last, whether there are potential side effects, or the expertise of your injector, this is the time to get all the information you need to feel at ease.

Treatment

With a plan in hand, it’s time for the actual injection process, which is much quicker and more comfortable than many first-timers expect. In fact, the actual injection process typically takes only about 15 to 30 minutes max, depending on the areas treated. Here’s what happens:

  • Cleaning: The targeted area will be thoroughly cleansed.
  • Numbing: Though not always necessary, a topical numbing agent or ice may be applied to ensure your comfort.
  • Marking: Your provider may mark the areas to be injected.
  • Injection: Using a fine needle, the product is injected into the specified areas. You may feel a quick pinch or slight pressure, but most clients report it’s much less painful than anticipated.
  • Post-Injection Care: Immediately after, the provider may give a gentle massage to the area.

And that’s it, you’re all done! You will also receive care instructions to maximize the treatment benefits and minimize any potential side effects, such as swelling or bruising. These can include avoiding strenuous exercise for a day or two, staying hydrated, and using a cold compress if needed.

After Your Injections

After a Botox treatment, you might notice some immediate results. However, you can expect the full effect unfold over the following days to weeks. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, offer more instant gratification, with results visible almost immediately after the swelling subsides.

It’s normal to notice some mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. These minor side effects are typically short-lived and can be easily managed with the aftercare tips provided by your injector.

Maintaining Your Results

To extend the life of your results, follow your provider’s aftercare instructions closely. Staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and maintaining a healthy skincare regimen can all contribute to longer-lasting results. Regular follow-up appointments are essential to maintain the look, as your provider can adjust treatments based on how your skin responds and evolves over time.
